Melbourne at War – Stop 2a

Stop 2a is Flinders Street Railway Station

Flinders Street Railway Station, along with Spencer Street Station (or Southern Cross as it is now called), was busy with young recruits coming in and uniformed soldiers leaving.
“We pulled into Flinders Street Station while they reversed the engine – it would be about 9am when all the people were going to work. Some of the young and not so young girls found out that there was a troop train standing at the platform and they all flocked down. Kisses were free for the taking. I can now understand how the young girls felt – here was a trainload of young chaps being taken out of the country, many never to return.”

From here, keep walking to Speakers Corner, on Yarra Banks.
