Ian Hay McGregor Lonie, 30/10/1940 – 16/2/2016
It is with sadness that members of the Heritage Council of Victoria note the passing of Ian Lonie
Ian was a foundation member of the HBPC created under the Historic Buildings Act 1974. He took over as Chairman from Rodney Davidson in 1977 and served in that role until the early 1980s.
A lawyer with Clayton Utz he was recognised as one of Victoria’s foremost practitioners in environmental and planning law, advising and representing planning and responsible authorities, developers and objector groups.
He was president of the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association from 2002 to 2004 and was made a life fellow in 2010.
He was also Honorary Solicitor for the Victorian College for the Deaf, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather.
He had a long battle with Parkinson’s after his retirement but passed away peacefully at Epworth Hospital on 16 February. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Barbara and children Louisa, Scot and Robert.
His Memorial Service will be held at the Toorak Uniting Church, 603 Toorak Road, Toorak on Thursday (February 25, 2016) commencing at 2.00 pm.
