About the Victorian Heritage Register

The Victorian Heritage Register is an official list of heritage places and objects that are important to the history and development of Victoria.

These are places and objects of cultural heritage significance to our state. This means they have met the criteria and threshold for inclusion in the Register.

Heritage places and objects in the Register have legal protection under the Heritage Act 2017.

Deciding what's in the Register

The Heritage Council decides what should and shouldn’t be in the Register. We:

  • decide if places or objects should be included, changed or removed

  • review nomination, permit and exclusion decisions by Heritage Victoria

  • promote what’s in the Register to help grow public understanding and appreciation of Victoria’s heritage.
