Heritage systems have traditionally separated places with 'Aboriginal' and 'non-Aboriginal' values. But many places have deep histories for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

The Heritage Council and the Victorian Aboriginal Council are working together to make a more inclusive heritage system that reflects all of Victoria's history.

We want to acknowledge that every place in Victoria has an Aboriginal history. We also want to recognise places with shared histories. We know that stories and memories about events and places may differ or conflict.

Our work aims to ensure the Victorian Heritage Register accurately describes the cultural heritage values important to Aboriginal people and other Victorians. This is key for a respectful and accurate heritage register.

Together we have developed:

  • a framework to identify places in Victoria with Aboriginal and shared heritage values

  • a method for documenting Aboriginal and shared heritage values

  • an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources to support the assessment of places with Aboriginal and shared heritage values.

Registration reports for 2 places with Aboriginal heritage value are provided as an example of this shared work.
