Old Vintage Melbourne

Discover old Melbourne through the Metro Tunnel Project

Old vintage

Explore the fascinating artefacts uncovered during the Metro Tunnel Project excavations.

These remarkable finds come from a grocery store that once stood next to Young and Jackson on Swanston Street. After a fire in 1855, a treasure trove of archaeological items was preserved, giving us a unique glimpse into live in Melbourne during the 1850s.

Acknowledgement goes to Chris Macheras, curator of Old Vintage Melbourne. Special thanks also to Meg Goulding and Jen Porter from Ochre Imprints, Jeremy Smith at Heritage Victoria, the Metro Tunnel Project team and Rail Projects Victoria for their collaboration and insights.
