Migration Heritage

Since the 1940s migration to Victoria has changed the face of our State immeasurably.

In order to better understand the significance of post 1940s migration to Victoria’s heritage, in 2011 Heritage Victoria, supported by the Heritage Council of Victoria, engaged Context to research and write a thematic study.

Project purpose

  • Understand migration to Victoria from the 1940s.
  • Uncover places, objects, collections.
  • Engage those who migrated in this period.

Pilot project

The pilot project with the City of Darebin aimed to:

  • Test out different ways of working with migrant communities.
  • Find a Council with strong connections to its migrant communities and an interest in helping discover the places that these communities see as part of their heritage.
  • Learn how to help other Councils identify migration heritage places and work with communities in their local heritage studies.
