IPO Morwell Power Station

The Heritage Council of Victoria has issued an Interim Protection Order (IPO) for Morwell Power Station in Morwell. Under the Heritage Act 1995 an interim protection order temporarily places an object or a place on the Victorian Heritage Register while its heritage significance is being considered. It is used when a place or object is deemed to be under threat and allows time to assess its heritage significance.

The Heritage Council received an application for interim protection from a concerned local resident in the region. In making the order, the Heritage Council took into account that the place is under imminent threat and there is a prima facie case for potential heritage significance. In order to protect the process of the Heritage Act 1995 and allow Heritage Victoria to assess the power station an IPO is required.

The IPO for Morwell Power Station remains in force from 27 March 2017 for 4 months or for a further period to be determined by the Minister for Planning or until-

  • the place or object is included in the Heritage Register; or
  • the Heritage Council determines that the place or object does not warrant inclusion in the Heritage Register; or
  • the Heritage Council removes the order whichever first

The interim protection order is in place for Morwell Power Station and Briquette Factory, Morwell, the surrounding works area, and part of the SECV rail line.
